Ulrike Schumann is a Senior Lecturer at the John Curtin School of Medical Sciences at the Australian National University. She trained in Biotechnology and obtained her PhD in Microbiology at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Her expertise in different RNA research areas, including small RNAs and RNAi, epitranscriptomics and novel spatial gene expression technologies, has led to substantial scientific contributions. Her current work focusses on understanding how changes in cellular RNA abundance alters during retinal degenerative diseases, modulates RNA-RNA interaction potential, and consequently impacts disease progression. Further, her work characterises serum-derived RNAs as diagnostic molecules for retinal degenerative diseases to develop point-of-care detection capability that supports clinicians in patient care and disease management.
