Maina is a Bioinformatician working on the structure and function of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs).  She received a BSc degree in Biophysics and Bioinformatics from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ - Brazil) while working with Dr. Burkhard Rost at the Technische Universität München (TUM - Germany). She received her PhD from the Bioinformatics Graduation Program of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG - Brazil), including an internship at the Garvan Institute (Australia). She now works in the Functional Genomics group at QIMR Berghofer,and is the QLD representative and event coordinator for the A-RNA EMCR committee.
